Stanford: Better than UCLA – so far

Is it possible that at 3-3, Stanford has looked more impressive than Oregon, ASU, and UCLA, and possibly even Cal? It is certain they have been more impressive than USC and Oregon State, but forcing a heavily heralded Kentucky team into an overtime game is impressive.

Kentucky, fifth in the nation at game time, required a 10-2 run in overtime to put the pesky Cardinal away. That’s impressive for the Cardinal, who were thought by many to be a shoe-in for the PAC-10 basement. they could still wind up there, but in the early goings they have been more impressive than a lot of the young (and not-so-young) squads in the conference.

Landry Fields (23.0 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 3.0 apg ) and Jeremy Green (14.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg) have been as strong a duo as the PAC-10 has seen so far this year. With Fields (PAC-10: 3rd in scoring and rebounding) making a solid case for PAC-10 Player of the year, the Cardinal may be quickly exceeding expectations and preparing to force their way into the top half of the conference.

Don’t misunderstand, I’m not heralding them as being there… yet, but they have performed that way to date. They have, afterall, played the seventh toughest schedule amongst PAC-10 teams to date. But at this point you have to give credit where credit is due. And for the time being they deserve it.
